Hello there...Stefania Casagrande!
Submitted by Michi on 15 August 2024.
Meet Stefania Casagrande, JAB subject editor with expertise in eco-physiology. Read the short interview with Stefania below and learn about her current research projects and about her experience as a subject editor with JAB.
You are a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and your key research area is eco-physiology. What can you tell us about your latest research?
I have several projects going at the moment. My latest research explores how environmental stress, like high temperatures, impacts cell energy production, cellular aging, and overall performance across different species and life stages. I am also committed to giving back to the species I study by tackling conservation issues. Currently, I’m focusing on the eco-physiology and behavior of Scopoli's shearwaters while also investigating the traits that make some birds more prone to getting caught in fishing gear, particularly their attraction to easy but risky food sources.
You joined JAB as a subject editor in 2021; hence, you are still a relatively new member of the editorial board. What is your experience as subject editor so far?
This experience has enriched me in several ways, not least by expanding my network. I am honored to serve the amazing ornithological community around the world, and I love the friendly and supportive atmosphere of the editorial board.
Enough about work - what do you enjoy doing most in your spare time?
I love to spend time with family and friends, preparing and enjoying good food. I also take great pleasure in caring for my herb garden, which I set up a few years ago and represents a piece of the Mediterranean in the cold Bavarian climate. Also, I enjoy hiking with my dog and playing padel tennis (I also won a local tournament in the beginner category, I am very proud of myself!).
What are you looking most forward to over the next year (personally or professionally)?
Next year, I will probably start teaching at a university, a new challenge that I am eagerly anticipating. Personally, I aim to further improve my padel skills….
